It is an open source project which means any programmer can download its code and tool kit if they wish to develop or contribute to the project. Some of its goals are to help in reducing the ridiculous marketshare that Microsoft (expensivly) holds and to create a uniform international standard (that is FREE!) Just think how much money would be saved if half of the government offices, schools, and, businesses of America did not shell out the cash to put Microsoft Office on all of its computers. Oh yeah it relys heavily on XML for its document file formatting as well. Another goal of OOo is to be the cross platform choice. Not only does it work on versions of windows 98-vista, it is compatible with Mac OSX, Linus, and a few other smaller opperating systems.

I use this at my office and it does everything Microsoft can do including interpreting just about every Microsoft document out there. Just a suggestion for the next time you find yourself with a computer that doesn’t have Office on it and you haven’t been able to get the discs from your friend yet. You can get this for free online just by downloading it. Here is the wikipedia article for more information too. It is a little more digestable than the official webiste I think.
